Today marks the 4th year anniversary of the start of the Iraq war. There are many things I could say on this occasion about how it has been mishandled, how we were suckered into it from the beginning, how it seems like such a waste of resources, and so on. Instead of doing that, I would just like to take a moment on this sad and solemn 'anniversary' and send some virtual flowers (the traditional gift on the 4th year) to the brave men and women who continue to fight and die while wearing our uniform and waiving our flag a half a world away.
Of course as a former soldier myself, I know that flowers are the last things they want or need right now. What they want is to be brought back home to their families (working on that) and what they need are some of the basic essentials of life. With that in mind I have compiled a list of sites you can check out and help to whatever level you can. My wife and I have given to a couple of these sites and believe me when I say; it is a small gesture, but it goes so far towards making them feel remembered and appreciated. More than that though, it also goes a long way towards easing the feelings of guilt inside yourselves that you may have that you are not doing enough fighting for or supporting of them.
So, like I said, please check out these sites, tell your friends, and do what you can to help. I know from experience, these brave souls give so much in the way of personal freedoms and rights, while getting so little in return from their government. Regardless of your feelings on the war, please don't let that taint your feelings towards these great Americans.
