So yippie for Imus being fired and bringing a *touch* of decency back to the radio airwaves. He definitely got what he deserved, in my opinion, although it sounds like he should have been fired on many other occasions for similar racist remarks. Then again, there are numerous other radio blabbers who should also have been fired long ago since they find it necessary to make their points while denigrating women, minority, gays, democrats and the like. Media Matters has put together a good list of such offenses here.
Until every one of these people are held to account for their words, then we really are not yet even making a dent in this battle of raising the discourse. I can only hope that this controversy springboards the awareness and subsequent action to clean up this vile mess. Don't get me wrong here, I am all for freedom of speech and do not feel that the FCC or any such governmental organization needs to step in to regulate this kind of stuff; I just think a lot of this is bordering on hate speech and should not be tolerated by us, the listening public, from anyone. All hate speech does is generate hate, and we already have too much of that in today's world.
Thanks for reading...

I completely agree that Imus was VERY wrong and after doing some research (never have listened to him) it seems that this is not the first time this has happened. I also agree that he should not be on the air. What I don't agree with is that the "higher powers" are the ones that took him off the air. It should be we the people that turn the channel therefore forcing him off the air and clearly this should have happened a long time ago. As a journalism major I have to say it worries me that the large corporations/advertisers and media moguls have so much power in this industry. I feel like when you give them the power to silence people there will be a fine line drawn between what is right and what is wrong. I feel when this happens we will lose our precious freedom of speech and those with the mighty dollar will be the only ones allowed to state their opinions.
