It has been a while since my last post, one month and 17 days to be exact. One thing has definitely remained constant throughout this hiatus, the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Within the constant of this seemingly never-ending race, you also have some "sub-constants".
Let us look at a few:
1) Sen. Hillary Clinton continues to attack attack attack her fellow contender on ever increasing personal levels.
2) The chances of Sen. Clinton being able to surpass, or even catch up with Sen. Obama in terms of total delegates, money, pledged delegates, states won, or overall popular vote continue to decrease.
3) Sen. John McCain continues to benefit from the Democratic candidates tearing each other down with the help of the media, while having that media spotlight turned completely away from himself.
4) It becomes ever more clear that Sen. Clinton will not put an end to her campaign, for the sake of her party's chances in the general election, until after the convention in August.
5) The animosity amongst supporters of both Democratic Senators continues to grow to the point where a considerable portion of them may decide to stay home for the general election.
6) DNC Chairman Howard Dean, former VP Al Gore, and former Democratic candidate John Edwards remain content to sit on the sidelines and watch these two candidates tear each other apart instead of using their influence to try and help stop the bleeding.
I am sure I could go on, but you get the point. The question I have is, why does Sen. Clinton not get the point? Yes, I know she is coming off of a "big win" last night in Pennsylvania, so quiting is the last thing on her mind right now. BUT, I just want to take a moment and pretend like she would ever read this post, and/or would listen to sound logic coming from a lifelong Democrat and consistent voter, and maybe try and talk a little sense into her. It is worth a shot, right? If nothing else, I am getting these pent up feelings out into the open. Here goes...
Sen Clinton,
I have to first ask you a simple question. Why? Why are you continuing to do this to your party, and to a larger degree, to your country, when you know there is VERY little shot of your winning this primary election? You know that after last night's margin of victory (which, don't get me wrong, was an impressive 8.5 percent) that you officially now have no shot of ending up with the pledged delegate lead at the end of this race? And I am sure you have smart people on your campaign team that are now telling you, again as a result of last night's victory margin, that you also have no chance of ending this race with the lead in overall popular vote count? You know that once Sen. Obama won his 26th state, way back in February I believe it was, that you no longer have the ability to win a plurality of states? You also have to be able to sense now that, since Feb. 5th (remember, "Super Tuesday", the date your campaign expected this race to be over and clearly yours?) you have not been able to keep pace with Sen. Obama in either money raised, amount of donors, or super delegates? To add to this pain, it also has to hurt that you have lost some of your own super delegates; AND, it really has to sting that super delegates you were counting on through ties with your husband, like Gov. Richardson, have gone with the other candidate.
I know there is no easy way to swallow this pill. You were it. You were our party's big shining star when this thing started. You are the wife of our party's hero. We were all ready to throw you on our shoulders and carry you to the White House to save us from 8 years of "W" madness. Then along comes this even brighter shining star and messed up all of those dreams for you. I can't imagine being an historic candidate, such as you are, and having that negated by another historic candidate in the same election cycle. SERIOUSLY, what are the odds!?
At this point though, none of that should matter. You know what you need to do, right? And it is not just for your party, nor is it just for your political future. No, it is for something much bigger than ego, it is for your country. I know you know what dire straights we are in right now after 8 years of a disastrous President, and I KNOW that you do not want to sentence us to 4 or 8 more years of the same types of mistakes. You know we can not afford nor sustain a John McCain Presidency. That is why I plead of you, I BEG of you to end this run and help to heal our party RIGHT NOW around it's eventual nominee. You have a huge following and a huge support base, and you have to know that we are going to need that in order to win in November against Sen. McCain and his "attack media" that supports him.
Please, at least consider this...and soon.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Democrat
P.S. I am sure I don't need to remind you of this fact either, since someone on your staff has likely already brought it up. The last candidate to go into the convention trailing in pledge delegates, convincing the super delegates to swing his way because he was a better candidate in the fall (you know, the strategy you are currently employing), that candidate, Walter Mondale. You also remember how many states he ended up winning in the fall of 1984, right? Yep, ONE.
